We can't reset your master password, because we never have it. The Recovery Kit is how you get back in if you forget it.
What it is
When you create your master password, Atrium generates a recovery key and shows it once, as a Recovery Kit you can download as a text file or save as a QR code. Saving it is part of setup.
The recovery key can unwrap your account key, just like your master password can. Keep it as safe as you would the password itself.
Where to keep it
- Somewhere offline, such as a printed copy in a drawer or a safe.
- Not only on the device it protects: if you lose the laptop, you'd lose both.
- Tell someone you trust where it is, if you want them to be able to help in an emergency.
Using it
On the unlock screen, choose to recover with your Recovery Kit, enter the recovery key, and set a new master password. Your data isn't re-encrypted; only the wrapping around your account key changes.
Recovering also removes any passkey unlock you'd set up, so add your passkeys again afterwards.
If you lose both
If you lose your master password and your Recovery Kit, your data can't be recovered by anyone, including us, on any plan. There is no back door; that is what makes the encryption meaningful.
